THEMIS paper at XXV Congress of the European Society for Rural Sociology, Florence, Italy
Event date: Monday 29th July 2013 - Thursday 1st August 2013
Dora Sampaio and Rui Carvalho of the THEMIS team at IGOT University of Lisbon, Portugal will present their THEMIS paper "International migration to rural Europe in a context of crisis: A case study of Moroccan immigrants in the Algarve (Portugal)" at this ESRS conference in Italy.
How is the current economic crisis affecting the social and spatial mobility patterns of Moroccan immigrants in the Algarve, Portugal?
This presentation aims to examine this topic by focusing on the Moroccan community established in the Algarve region, namely those immigrants working in the agricultural sector and living in predominantly rural areas. For this purpose, and based on a set of qualitative and quantitative data, two major dimensions of analysis are considered: i) these migrants’ socioeconomic (e.g. sectoral job shifts) and territorial (from international to local) trajectories, both before and after the “eruption” of the crisis; and ii) their socioeconomic and spatial representations of the crisis, used as a proxy for future intentions of mobility.
This will be presented in the Working Group on ‘Rural Mobilities in Times of Crisis’ (For more information: http://www.florenceesrs2013.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/9WG.pdf).
