Session 608.  International migration and family dynamics

Transnational family arrangements are prevalent the world over with one or both parents located overseas and children left behind to be raised by a family member or friend.  Despite the prevalence of these arrangements, little is known about their efects on three categories of actors involved: migrant parents, children, and their caregivers in the country of origin.  The few studies that exist are qualitative, center mainly on the US-South America migration flow and hardly focus on the category of caregivers.  Partly this gap in knowledge is due to the lack of quantitative data on this phenomenon.  Partly, academic scholarship on families and migration has, respectively, had a bias for families living together in the same nation-state or ignored the effects of migration on family relationships.

This session invites researchers who have conducted primary data collection on the effects of migration on transnational family members, using quantitative or mixed methods.  The effects analyzed can relate to health, education, job performance or emotional wellbeing, on various categories of transnational family members: children, parents and caregivers.  The session aims to compare outcomes in various parts of the world.

Contributors are invited to submit an abstract by 15 October 2012.
